Choosing a Microphone for Singing and Recording

25 March 2026 · Clearwater Music School, Brinscall

Match the mic to the job

A microphone is just a tool for capturing sound, and the right one depends on what you want to do. The good news is that you do not need a fortune to get a result you are proud of. Let us walk through the main types.

Dynamic microphones

Dynamic mics are tough, affordable and forgiving. They handle loud sources happily and ignore most of the room around them, which makes them ideal for singing live, rehearsing in a busy house, or recording in a room that is not soundproofed. The classic handheld stage mic is a dynamic, and it is a brilliant first buy.

Condenser microphones

Condenser mics are more sensitive and capture lots of fine detail, which is why studios reach for them on vocals and acoustic guitars. The trade-off is that they pick up everything, including the washing machine and passing traffic, so they reward a quiet, soft-furnished room. Many need “phantom power” from an audio interface to work.

USB microphones

If you simply want to plug into a laptop and record, a USB microphone is the easiest route in. There is no separate interface to buy, and modern USB mics sound genuinely good for singing, songwriting demos and practice recordings.

A few things that matter more than the mic

  • The room. A carpet, curtains and a few soft furnishings tame echo far more than an expensive microphone ever will.
  • A pop filter. A cheap foam or mesh shield softens the puffs of air on words starting with p and b.
  • Distance. A hand-span from the mic is a sensible starting point for singing.
