The Importance of Breathing for Singing

6 May 2026 · Clearwater Music School, Brinscall

Breath is the engine

Ask any singing teacher what they spend the most time on and breathing will be near the top of the list. Your breath powers every note, so when it is steady and well managed, pitch, tone and stamina all fall into place. When it is not, you run out of air, push too hard and tire quickly. It really is the foundation everything else sits on.

Breathe low, not high

Most of us breathe shallowly, lifting the shoulders and filling only the top of the chest. Singers learn to breathe lower, letting the belly and ribs expand so the lungs fill more fully. This is often called diaphragmatic breathing, and it gives you a deeper, calmer tank of air to sing from.

Three simple exercises

  • The hand test. Rest a hand on your stomach and breathe in slowly. Aim to feel your hand move outwards rather than your shoulders lifting.
  • The slow hiss. Breathe in for four counts, then let the air out on a steady “sss” for as long as you can. Keep it smooth and even, and try to extend it a little each day.
  • The supported phrase. Sing a line of a favourite song and notice where you run out of breath. Plan your breaths in advance, the way a swimmer plans their strokes.

Support, not force

“Support” is the gentle, controlled release of that breath as you sing. The goal is never to push or squeeze, but to let the air flow steadily so your voice stays free and relaxed. A good teacher will help you feel the difference, which is far easier in person than from any video.

Practise with a guide

Breathing habits are subtle, and a second pair of ears makes all the difference. In our singing lessons in Chorley we build these techniques into songs you love, so they become natural rather than something to think about. New to singing lessons?
